  • Not so Graceful Aging and the Effects on Your Feet

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there were an elixir for youth, or perhaps a fountain of youth? Well, sadly enough, no one has discovered it yet! It seems the best you can do is to maintain your overall health the best you can and accept the fact that time marches forward. What about your feet? Do they march forward? Or as you age does marching become more of a chore?

As you age, you are more susceptible to diseases of the aging population, such as diabetes. Diabetes is a disease that has a profound effect on the feet. The feet being a long way from the heart are more apt to suffer from poor circulation problems such as arteriosclerosis or PAD.

What other changes can you expect as your feet age? Through your adult life, the foot usually changes shape. It is normal for the foot to increase in both length and width due to the cumulative effects of weight bearing and stretching of ligaments, which can cause painful conditions.

Feet lose their fat pads over time. The fat pads provide natural cushioning, but after a lifetime of pressure, they begin to deteriorate, and discomfort may result. There are treatments available for this, so don’t continue in pain. Dr. Perlstein has Clouds for your feet, a treatment of injectable fillers to restore the pads.

As a society, we seem to be proactive when it comes to aging, in all areas but our feet. We change hair color, have a little nip here and tuck there and renew our efforts at the gym. We try things like juice and oxygen bars, dietary supplements and cosmetics all in an effort to erase aging. What can we do for our feet?

    • View shoes from the functionality standpoint instead of what’s fashionable. So much of the high fashion is directly responsible for foot problems. Be kind to your feet and select something that is supportive, cushioned and non-restrictive in the toe area.
    • Seek treatment for foot conditions that cause pain.
    • Keep feet clean and well groomed.
    • Keep your feet feeling good.  By doing so you will be more apt to lead an active life and reap the benefits.
